Salt Dough Ornament

This Salt Dough Ornament Recipe is my new favorite. Making these cuties is so easy, and adds the best vintage touch to your tree! There are so many ways to decorate these to make them unique in your own way. Cutting them out is also a hit with the kids, so make sure you try these out!

Salt Dough Ornament Recipe

Need:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 3/4 to 1 cup water
  • straw or toothpick for making hanging holes
  • twine or ribbon to hang ornament

Directions:

Preheat oven to 200 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper

In a bowl mix the flour and salt

Slowly pour in the water while mixing until you get a dough consistency. These are very forgiving. Too sticky? Add more flour. Not doughy enough? Add more water

Roll your dough to about 1/4 inch thick. Dust with flour to help you roll them out

After rolling out, use a cute cookie cutter to cut out shapes

Poke a hole at the top of each cut out for the string to go through. I used a straw for this and it was the perfect size hole

Bake for one hour, and then flip them over and back an additional hour. You can also just let them air dry, but this could take several days for them to harden completely

Once ornaments are cooled or dry, decorate them and tie a string through the hole. BAM! That’s all!

These are seriously the cutest ornaments that add a vintage feel to your tree. I simply drew on mine with a pen and dolled up the string a bit with beads and red bows. Other ways to decorate your ornaments are to paint them, or you can even stamp right onto them! If you stamp them – make sure you stamp them before you bake them. I’ve also seen some that have nature (leaves, branches, tree cuttings) pressed onto them before baking that turned out super cute. Be creative! Enjoy, and be sure to tag me if you post about your creations.
