Hi Friends! Today I want to show you how to build your own garden box. I think it’s great that there’s companies out there that sell garden boxes, however, they can be so costly! I want to show you how to build a simple wood box that is easy to put up and will save you money, especially if you’re using old wood lying around! Let’s get started…
— (6) pieces of 2 in x 8 in x 8 ft douglas fir wood
— (4) 9 inch L braces
— (40) 1 1/4 inch coated screws for braces
— (16) 1 1/4 inch coated screws for wood corners
— 1/4 Inch Galvanized Wire
STEP ONE
Use your measuring tape and measure 4 feet across a board. Mark it and cut the board in half (at 4 feet). You’ll do this to 2 boards so you will have four 4 foot boards. We use our saw to cut our boards. If you don’t have one you can usually get wood cut at any hardware store such as Home Depot.
STEP TWO
Place two of the 8 foot boards side by side. Place one L Brace at one end of the boards as shown in the picture. Drill screws into the holes of the L Brace only on one side. Place an L Brace at the other end of the two boards and drill it in place again, only on one side.
Do this same step on the remaining two 8 foot boards. You should now have two 8 foot pieces with one L Brace at each end.
STEP THREE
Stand one 8 foot piece up in place. Make sure you do the remaining steps on a completely flat surface, or in the exact spot you’re going to place the box. Grab one 4 foot board and place it on the outside of the 8 foot piece as shown. Drill two screws through the 4 foot board and into the 8 foot board as shown. Grab another 4 foot board and place it on top of the 4 foot board. Drill two more screws through that board and into the top of the 8 foot board.
STEP FOUR
Grab your other 8 foot piece and stand it up in place. Drill the 4 foot boards you worked with previously to that 8 foot piece (just like you did in Step Three). You should have 4 screws going through the 4 foot board and into the 8 foot boards.
STEP FIVE
Repeat Step Three on the opposite end of the box, attaching the last two 4 foot boards to the box. Again, use 4 screws at each corner, 8 screws total. Try and drill the screws deep enough where the Brace is fully touching and laying flat against the wood.
STEP SIX
Your box should be screwed together and in place. Now you will finish screwing the other side of the 4 L Braces that are on the inside corners of the box. The L Braces will help hold your box together for a longer amount of time than just screws on the outside of the box.
STEP SEVEN
Use your wire cutters and cut your wire to the size of the box. Make sure you cut the outside dimension instead of the inside dimension of the box. You need the wire to lay over the wood so that you can staple it to the wood. Staple your wire to the box, stapling every 6 inches or so. The wire is used so that rodents can’t dig holes into your garden box!
STEP EIGHT
Flip your box over so the wire is now on the bottom of the box.
You’re finished! Your box is ready to be filled up with soil and planted. We purchased all of our materials at Home Depot, but you can purchase all at any hardware store. The L Brace we used doesn’t have to be the exact brace you use, but I would try to find a longer one so you can attach both boards easily. I love the look of wood boxes so I’m so excited that we decided to build 8 of them! If you build one make sure you tag me on Instagram so I can see. Happy building friends!
