How to Regrow Green Onions

how to regrow green onions

Hi There! Ok…did you know you can regrow green onions from scraps? You CAN!

I’m not sure how I’m just finding this out. I’m almost embarrassed to say I didn’t know about this because it’s so simple, but I had to share it with you guys anyway in case you didn’t know like myself! I absolutely LOVE green onions. I put them in every meal I can! I love that it adds some flavor, but it’s not overpowering like a purple onion can be at times.

I actually just seeded a bunch of green onions a couple weeks ago, but am so excited that I found out I can do this right from my kitchen. The results are so much quicker than seeding! No joke, within a week and a half my green onions completely grew back. Follow the simple steps below to find out for yourself!

             What You’ll Need:

  • Cutting Board
  • Knife
  • Green Onions
  • Glass Jar

I feel like everyone has a ton of glass jars laying around, but if you don’t, I love the jars to the right! They make a cocktail look cute for summer bbqs, too! (Click the picture to view)

STEP ONE : Cut Your Onions

When you use the green onions you bought from the grocery store, cut them around 2 inches above the roots. Normally I would have just thrown the roots away, but I’ll be keeping all of them now! If you need an idea of what to make with your green onions, check out my vegetable side recipe here… It’s BOMB!

STEP TWO : Fill Jar With Water

Fill a glass jar or cup 1/2 – 1 inch with water depending on how long the roots are. You want the roots to be completely submerged in water (obviously). Feel free to doll up your jar if you want! My jars are on my kitchen counter, so I tied a lace ribbon around them to make them cuter. This could be a fun activity for the kids. You could even paint the jars!

STEP THREE : Place Onions in Jar

Gently place your green onion roots in the jar, roots down. They’ll want to fall over, so try and place them against the glass so they’ll stay standing upright.

STEP FOUR : Watch Them Grow!

I seriously can’t believe how fast my green onions grew. Within a week they were already poking out of the jar! I felt like a kid on Christmas morning running to my jar when I woke up and saying “WOW OMG!” I wish I was kidding, but I’m not. LOL My husband thinks I’m crazy. Anyway, it’s THAT simple you guys! I know green onions aren’t expensive so I can’t imagine you’ll save a ton of money, but it will save you a trip to the store! I hope you guys start saving your roots and enjoy trying this out! Tag me in all of your before and after pictures, and let me see your kids’ artwork if they decorate their jars! HAPPY GROWING!
